New eight-seater chairlift Gifthittli for increased capacity and comfort

The lift has always been a significant asset to the Matterhorn Ski Paradise. As the central transport link between the Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat areas, it offers guests not only a wide variety of slopes but also a high degree of flexibility between the ski areas.

With the construction of the new Gifthittli chairlift, Zermatt Bergbahnen is investing in a modern eight-seater chairlift with weather protection hoods, manufactured by Leitner. As one of the first eight-seater chairlifts in Switzerland, it sets new standards in terms of comfort and technology. Access to the lift is optimised by a straight entry in the direction of movement,
which improves the flow of guests and makes boarding much more comfortable for passengers.

The new EVO premium chairlift will be used to ensure maximum comfort on the line. With its DIRECTDRIVE drive system and LEITCONTROL control system, the lift is equipped with the latest technology from Leitner. The lift is also being prepared for future operation without the need for a staffed mountain station. 

Dismantling of the current installation and construction work will begin immediately after the end of the winter season on 21 April 2025. The existing installation will be properly dismantled and rebuilt by a third-party company in another European ski resort.

The entire construction project will be carried out under ecological construction supervision. Thanks to the existing length profile and static conditions, more than half of the pillar foundations of the previous installation can be reused for the new chairlift. This will minimise the impact on the environment and Zermatt Bergbahnen will be setting an example in line with its sustainability strategy.
